Stephen Sondheim's first musical as both a composer and lyricist is a Vaudeville-style romp based on two ancient Roman comedies. The plot is simple. Pseudolus (a slave) wants to be free; but he can only win his freedom by making sure that a beautiful young girl named Philia remains a virgin until her young suitor (Hero) can marry her. Unfortunately, Hero is not alone in desiring Philia. Both his father, a handsome young soldier and the local Brothel Keeper have designs upon her.
