Story:

Set in London, 1895. Wealthy bachelor Jack Worthing lives in the country with his ward Cecily, but has created a troublemaking alter-ego named Ernest in order to escape his conservative lifestyle. Jack arrives in London to visit his good friend Algernon, and to propose to Algernon’s cousin, Gwendolen, who also thinks of him as Ernest. Gwendolen’s mother, the formidable Lady Bracknell, interviews Jack as a prospect, but deems him unsuitable. Regardless, Gwendolen professes her undying love to Jack/Ernest.

Algernon suspects that Jack is leading a double life when he finds a personal message in Jack’s cigarette case. This piques Algernon's interest and, uninvited, he turns up on the estate pretending to be Jack’s brother--the reprobate Ernest. He wins the heart of Cecily, and forces Jack to play along with his scheme. Gwendolyn arrives next and speaks to Cecily. Somehow the two are seemingly both engaged to Ernest!
