European Congress on Theatre and Prisons

Berlin, Germany, April 2000

After the conferences on Theatre & Prison in 1994, 1996, and 1998 in Milano and Manchester, we are planning a continuation through a Congress, which will take place in April 2000 in Berlin, Germany.

We have a rough draft of a 5-day event, which includes a weekend to allow as many participants to attend as possible.

Survey of plans:

Our intention is that the Congress will emphasise practice rather than theory, although theory will not be excluded. This means:

Each day, 2 - 3 workshops will be conducted by theatre experts from different countries, working, for example, with a resident prisoners' theatre group and/or with prison employees, and/or with resident and non-resident theatre and art experts. These work-shops will reveal and compare different methods, tasks, and issues for the future in each country, etc., as well as raising essential insights.

Each day 1 evening at least one play will take place, including works by the represented German prison theatre project, and hopefully, by international prisoners' theatre projects. The plays will occur in public theatres and in one of the six prisons in Berlin (see following 'background The performances will be open to as many people as possible, including participants of the Congress, and members of the public.

Each day there will be a panel discussion, possibly introduced by a lecture, with leading representatives of prison projects, as well as representatives from the government, prison, and other professionals such as psychologists, criminologists, sociologists, etc..

o There will be a presentation of national and international prisoners' theatre projects, and possibly other prison art projects 1 programs, including video performances, films on the themes of the Congress, etc..

o The Congress will be documented, it will also form an international panel for the dissemination and continuation of ideas and realizations raised during it's progress.
